michael voltaggio’s ink

this is truly art in food form. upon entering michael voltaggio’s newly opened ink in west hollywood, you’ll see a chalkboard near the bar that reads “BAR”. then, a chalkboard near the kitchen marked “ART”. one simple and understated word that defines his craft. i’m no foodie but i just had to experience it. a lot of hype went into this opening so naturally, reservations were hard to come by and were completely booked just 20 minutes after they were available. i was super stoked to land one.

there’s no doubt in my mind chef michael voltaggio put his heart and soul into this restaurant. edison bulbs, denim-upholstered seats and the staff’s pinstripe denim aprons emit an urban-ish vibe that really matches his style. somehow i felt like i knew him. like he was a homie. (fine, i wish). like most, i learned of michael voltaggio through top chef and instantly liked him for his semi hot temper, creativity, drive, and best of all, his sexy tattoos. living in la definitely has its perks. about a year ago, i found out he took up a residency as chef de cuisine at michelin star-rated the dining room in the pasadena langham huntington hotel. to this day, it is, hands down, the best meal i’ve ever had. ink is definitely up at that level too.

voltaggio uses his gastro-einstein-madscientist-onomy skills in a subtle way to transform each dish into something you’d question, how the hell did he make this?! every element on each plate worked together in a surprising way. my pallette literally bursted with delight and it was, without question, an amazing experience worth waiting for.

stumptown coffees costa rica torres, direct trade, villalobos
dungeness crab smoked mayo, bok choy “kimchi”

big sur camping: OFWGKTA

i felt like i was on the set of asian entourage, following 4 dudes around for 4 days with no electricity and hardly anything but my trusty camera. prior to the trip, my mindset was, yay! i get to hike, eat healthy, and be one with nature. i just might shed some pounds. we tried to pack mostly healthy veggies for curry night and hot pot night but alas, we couldn’t help but bring the junk. chips, croissants, muffins, alcohol, beer, scotch, and s’mores. fast forward to after the trip – me being back in my room, dirt stuck in my finger and toenails, and 8 pounds heavier. what a fail.

on night 1, the 4 macho men insisted on making a fire sans starter logs, lighter fluid, etc. i stood idly aside while i watched and snickered. they were successful for a good…10, 15 minutes, then the fire would completely die out. night 2 and 3 consisted of many many starter logs and squirts of lighter fluid. cue the “i told you so!” the days consisted of exploring, gathering wood, and hiking — the usual camp stuff. then at night, we brought the party to site 146. ice cold beers, 25+ tries of OFWGKTA light photography, my favorite scotch, huge feasts, s’mores and some card games!

deer, squirrels, and blue birds, surrounded the campgrounds when the sun was up, making for a pleasant disney-like surrounding but once night fell, the spiders, bugs, and worst of all, raccoons came out to haunt us and steal our chips.  3 huge raccoons came to visit us each night, their pupils glowed like elijah wood’s character in sin city. not cool man. other than the hissy raccoons, big sur was everything i imagined and more. the gigantic redwood tree forests, countless shining stars/planet X nibiru, and scenic cliff views of the pacific coast must be seen by the naked eye in order to truly appreciate its majestic beauty.

disneyland engagement: lindsay + jimmy

when lindsay and jimmy decided they wanted their engagement photos at disneyland, i was thrilled! after all, it’s disneyland…always a fun time filled with laughter, adventure, and love. more importantly, it’s a photographer’s dream to be in such gorgeous socal weather with endless photo opps. even with an outfit malfunction, lindsay and jimmy were all smiles and hugs. i must say, at the end of the day, my cheeks were sore and eye wrinkles prominent. i haven’t laughed that much in a while. thanks lindsay and jimmy for being such troopers and exploring disneyland with us! can’t wait for the wedding in april!

here are some of my favorites…with a surprise at the end:)

san francisco engagement: chante + dan

dan is a diehard giants fan and converted chante into one too. that’s love. i sat there, super impressed, while nodding my head  as she schooled me on the sport. they wanted some of their engagement photos in their hometown, san francisco, so we chose the iconic golden gate bridge and its beautiful surroundings. the day before the shoot, the skies were blue and free of sf’s infamous dreary clouds. we were super super excited and hopeful the weather would persist but of course, come saturday, the fog settled in and the golden gate was nearly completely covered. that’s sf weather for ya! regardless, we made it work and had an awesome time.

that is one happy family

kudos to dan for picking out such beautiful bling

though foggy, the light was just magical

chante, your smile is infectious

chante and dan are a blast to be around. they are willing to try anything…even swing from a tree

little emily, big shorty

the coolest neighbors on the block asked me to snap some quick shots of their daughter emily and dog, shorty.  they’re the ones that throw the taco stand block parties. without them, our entire street would be as active as dance hour at a nursing home. the day was gorgeous. emily wore the cutest little dress (and this time she wasn’t shying away from me!), and i can NEVER resist taking pics of shorty. as we were wrapping up, dozer came into the mix for a bit but was too big a punk to remain in one spot. after the photo sesh, i kept thinking to myself…when am i going to have a cute little babeh?!?!? biological clock is a-tickin’.

little em, shorty, and drool.

like father like daughter

shorty’s face is gleaming with satisfaction from the 3-person belly rub. what a spoiled beast!

she knows how to have fun, just like big emily
